The Tang Dynasty is widely regarded as China’s Golden Age—a time of abundance and power as well as the height of culture, economy, and politics in Chinese history. This illustrious period often evokes feelings of grandness and affluence—a concept DaTang Restaurant hopes to instill to their guests as they wine and dine at their second branch in McKinley Hill.
The first thing that you’ll notice about DaTang’s sophomore restaurant in Venice Grand Canal Mall is how its interiors exude richness and elegance. It’s like entering a scene from Wong Kar-wai’s masterpiece, In The Mood For Love—dark, dramatic tones injected with bright gold and deep red hues.
While their initial branch in BGC centers on Asian-inspired tapas, DaTang McKinley Hill specializes in Chinese Fusion dishes with highlights in Szechuan cuisine and as well as select specialties from Taiwan.
Here are some of their selections:
The Blanched Eggplant with Vinegar Sauce is already a crowd pleaser. Bite onto thick slices of eggplants doused with an addicting chili-vinegar sauce. We suggest eating each piece with some of the pickled string vegetables so you can have a hint of zest in every bite.
The Fish & Century Egg Soup may be a common dish served in Taiwan but for us it was quite a revelation. It might look unassuming at first, but once you take a sip at the delicate broth, you’ll be surprised at how soothing and intricate the flavors are brought by the abundant pieces of white fish, century egg slices, and fresh herbs to make it.
Sweet & Sour Fish is a classic Chinese viand that’s popularly recreated in Asian restaurants. DaTang’s rendition though is much more refined and impressive with its straightforward presentation of a perfectly-fried tilapia prepared butterfly-style that’s been heavily dressed with garlic-enriched sweet and sour sauce. A flurry of leek slices completes the plate, giving the dish its mouthwatering appeal.
The Stir-Fried Pork Liver with Sweet Sauce is a dish you wouldn’t want to miss especially if you enjoy eating liver. The humble protein is made into an extraordinary main dish thanks to the special soy-based sweet sauce to balance the gaminess of the pan-fried liver.
DaTang’s take on the Classic Dumplings gets the Szechuan treatment, which is perfect for guests who like their meals with a lot of heat. Each piece is made from scratch then steamed per batch upon order. The freshly-cooked dumplings are then plated in a pool of redolent chili sauce so you don’t need to dip every time you want to pop one into your mouth. You can even purchase a bag of frozen dumplings for your own home consumption.
Another atomic-flavored dish is the Spicy Chicken Gizzard stir-fried with fresh vegetables. Enjoy nibbling at this chewy yet super addicting entrée that goes perfectly well with a serving of their signature Fried Rice Pyramid and a cold glass of Tsingtao beer.
Of course, the dim sum selection at DaTang is on a league of its own. Just to start you off, we recommend the crispy Scallion Pancake Beef Roll, flavorful Pan-Fried Radish Cake, and really tender Steamed Chicken Feet with Chili Oil.
Leave some room for the Candied Sweet Taro for dessert. Each taro piece is coated with sugar syrup, which eventually hardens into a sweet caramel shell. Strings of hardened pulled sugar are added on top making this meal ender a delight to eat.
With its excellent selection of dishes and grand ambience, DaTang Restaurant is the perfect place where one can forget about the trivial life of a commoner and feel like Tang dynasty royalty, one dish at a time.
